Aeroglen is located 4 kilometres from the CBD, on the eastern slopes of Lumley Hill, and to the west of the airport. The suburb is bounded by Stratford Parade (Kamerunga Road) and the railway line. It has a mixture of housing types, and a number of sport and recreation spaces and facilities. Aeroglen is about 8mins drive north of Cairns CBD.
The population of Aeroglen is relatively stable, and is restricted in terms of future population by the lack of land available in the area for development. There are a number of older Queensland-style homes that have been well-renovated in the suburb but little high-density housing.
There are a number of parks including one with children’s play equipment; district level sports fields, walking tracks and hikes and a community hall. The nearest library is in the nearby suburb of Stratford, 5mins drive away. The nearest swimming pool is the Tobruk Memorial Pool on Sheridan Street, about 15mins drive away.
There is a doctor and chemist in the nearby suburb of Stratford, about 5mins drive from Aeroglen. The Cairns Base Hospital is approximately 15mins drive from Aeroglen.
There is a small grocery store, a butcher, a newsagent, a deli and café, a number of takeaway restaurants and a pub about 5mins away in the nearby suburb of Stratford. The closest large shopping centre is Cairns Central on McLeod Street in Cairns’ CBD about 15mins drive and which offers major department stores like Myer and Target, alongside Coles and Bi-Lo. Redlynch Shopping Centre is also about 15mins drive from Aeroglen. It has a Coles Supermarket, a bakery, newsagent and chemist.
There is a local childcare centre on Stratford Parade at Aeroglen. Other nearby child care centres including Edge Hill Child Care and a number of ABC Learning Centres in the suburbs of Cairns North and Manunda.
There is no school in the suburb of Aeroglen. The closest schools are Mother of Good Counsel Catholic primary school on Sheridan Street, about 10-15mins drive south, Freshwater Primary School at Freshwater, about 10mins drive north and St Andrew’s Catholic College (Prep-12) in Redlynch, about 15mins drive west. Other senior schools include Cairns High School on Sheridan Street in the city, about 15mins south and Trinity Bay State High School in the suburb of Manunda, about 20mins drive away. There are also a number of Christian colleges in the area including Freshwater Christian College in Brinsmead which is about 15mins drive from Aeroglen. Public transport The city Sunbus service connects Aeroglen to the northern beaches and to the CBD. The railway line is only used for freight and tourist trains (the Kuranda Train), and there are no railway stations in the area. Cairns city taxis service the area.
