Cairns City is the central business section of the city of Cairns. It has a population of 2598, which constitutes 2.2% of the total population of the Cairns Local Government Area. Cairns City has a mixture of land uses and activities, with commerce, recreation, and residential features. The area is constantly changing with new developments replacing existing or historical activities. Important areas in Cairns City are Munro Martin Park, which has cultural significance to the traditional owners of Cairns, Fogarty Park, the port area, and the old 'red light district' (China Town) in Grafton Street.

Cairns city has a major shopping centre, Cairns Central Shopping Centre, with outlets for Myer, Target, Coles, Bi-Lo, major Telco’s and specialty shops. Located on the Cairns Esplanade, The Pier is another major shopping centre with luxury fashion, five-star eateries, a bookshop and the Shangri-la Hotel. There are high fashion stores, major duty free stores, restaurants & cafés, chemists and hotels in the city centre.
There are a number of child care centres in Cairns city including two ABC Learning Centres and other private centres.
Cairns city centre has an all-girls Catholic High School, a number of Catholic primary schools and Cairns High State School. Adjacent centres of Edge Hill and Manunda have primary and high schools.
Sunbus has a central public transport hub in Lake Street, and the inter-state railway station is at the bottom of Cairns Central, at the end of Spence Street. There are also a number of touring bus companies and an airport bus service. The inter-state bus service also runs from Cairns city.
