Manunda is an inner city suburb of Cairns. Manunda has a high number of rental properties, which are mixed in terms of types of housing – there is a range of separate house, duplexes, units and apartments in the area. It is a relatively affordable place to live in Cairns particularly since it is quite close to the city centre. Manunda is about 7mins west of Cairns CBD.
The Manunda residents are quite diverse in age and cultural background, with high numbers of Indigenous people and people who speak a language other than English at home. It also has a high number of couples without children, lone-person households, and one-parent families living in the area.
There are a number of medical clinics and practitioners in Manunda. The closest hospital is the Cairns Base Hospital, about 7mins east of the suburb. Manunda has easy access to the complement of Cairns city medical, dental and pathology services.
Manunda has a wide range of local, and district level commercial activities, recreation facilities, and various green spaces. Council has a library and a retirement village in the area. There are also a range of community services, an RSL, Cominos House community centre and a dancing hall. Lennon Street Park and the PCYC are the key recreational facilities in the area. The nearest swimming pool is the Tobruk Memorial Pool in North Cairns or the Esplanade Lagoon in the city centre.
There is a supermarket on Pease Street as well as a number of specialty stores, a tavern, a bakery and takeaway food outlets. The nearest shopping centre is the small one at Raintrees and the closest major shopping centre is DFO in Westcourt or Cairns Central Shopping Centre in the city centre. Anderson Street in Manunda is home to a number of electronics and home products stores, mechanics and other light industrial businesses including printers and building supplies stores.
There are a number of ABC Learning Centres and other public and community child care centres in Manunda.
Trinity Bay State High School is located in Manunda; there are also a number of primary schools. The surrounding suburbs of Edge Hill, Bungalow and the city centre also have a variety of public and private schools.
Sunbus provides public transport to the area and taxis also service the area.
