Located some 15 minutes’ drive north of central Cairns, the Smithfield area is close to the Northern Beaches. Smithfield is the location of the southern terminal off the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway from Kurunda. Stupendous views across the plains to the coast are had as the Skyrail clears the mountain range to stop at Smithfield, close to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park Cairns. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park showcases the culture of the indigenous rainforest people of Tropical North Queensland. In close proximity to the Cairns CBD, Smithfield has good road access to the many attractions of Cairns; the Cairns Marina, Cairns Convention Centre, the casino, the indoor waterside markets with excellent crafts and unique clothing, theatres, shops and other Cairns attractions.
Smithfield has a population which includes many young families but is also representative of a broad cross section of all age groups. It is an area that is populated by many families due to it affordable housing and facilities.
Smithfield has a number of community facilities and sporting grounds. The cable ski park beside the Sky Rail terminal is popular and the Cattana Wetlands Conservation Park is popular with walkers and bird watchers alike. Smithfield is ideally located to take advantage of the northern beaches for that day on the beach.
There are a number of medical clinics and general practitioners in the Smithfield area which include pathology services. There are also several dentists. The government run Smithfield Community Health Centre is also a great asset for the area. The full complement of Cairns city medical, dental and pathology services are about 15mins drive from Smithfield. The nearest hospitals are Cairns Base Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital also about 15mins drive.
Smithfield is well serviced by a number of shopping centres. The major one is the Smithfield shopping centre. This includes Coles & Woolworths, Kmart, Dan Murphies and many specialty shop,s take away’s, and restaurants in the complex which is well serviced with car parking and bus services. On the east side of the Cook Highway is an area of commerce which includes take aways and specialty shops such as Mitre Ten and Bunnings. Further north is Stanton Plaza and the Campus shopping centre and on the other side of the highway are the University campus and another commercial area.
Smithfield is well serviced in this area and include: Early Learning Centre Smithfield, ABC Learning Centre, Kids In Care, Armadillo Child Care Centre, Marlin Coast Family Day Care Service and Bubbly Bears Child Minding
Smithfield is well known as the home of James Cook University. It is also serviced by Smithfield State High School and Holy cross primary school. The nearby suburbs of Yorkeys Knob, Caravonica and Trinity Park also have primary schools.
