Whitfield, Cairns is an established inner city suburb adjacent to Edge Hill. Much of the area is not suitable for development, including Mt Whitfield, which is a national park. Whitfield is considered to be one of the better suburbs of Cairns. Whitfield is about 16mins drive north-west of Cairns CBD.
It is characterised by old Queenslander housing, and duplexes. The population of the area is 4055, and these people are predominantly older non-Indigenous Australians. Consistent with an older population is the high proportion of couples without children.
Whitfield has a number of local level parks and a bowls club. It also has good access to services and facilities in adjacent areas, particularly Edge Hill and Manunda. The closest library is in Manunda, about 8mins drive south, and the nearest swimming pool is the Tobruk Memorial Swimming Pool, about 11mins drive north from Whitfield.
There are a number of general practitioners in Whitfield and the adjacent suburb of Edge Hill. The full complement of medical, dental and pathology services is available in Cairns city, about 16mins drive east. The closest hospital is Cairns Base Hospital, about 16mins drive away.
There is a small convenience shopping hub in Whitfield and a number of takeaway food outlets. The shopping hub of Edge Hill is about 5mins drive east. Raintrees Shopping Centre is about 10mins drive south and Cairns Central Shopping Centre is about 17mins drive south from Whitfield.
There is no child care available in Whitfield but the adjacent suburbs of Edge Hill, Brinsmead and Mununda have a number of child care centres.
Whitfield has a state primary school and the adjacent suburb of Manunda has a state high school, about 8mins drive east. The nearby suburb of Redlynch also offers a number of schooling options and is about 14mins drive west of Whitfield.
Sunbus and taxis provide a public transport service in the area.
